Macular Degeneration

You have been diagnosed with Age Related Macular Degeneration. There are two forms: the ‘Dry Form’ (less severe) and the ‘Wet Form’ (more severe). It is important to check the Amsler Grid on the reverse side daily to monitor for any changes. Call our office immediately if you notice any changes.

Medical studies have shown that special vitamin therapy can benefit patients with certain stages of Macular Degeneration and even improve vision. We recommend “Bausch & Lomb Ocuvite PreserVision-AREDS” or “I-Caps AREDS Formula”. Take two tablets per day with a meal

Smokers should stop smoking if you have Macular Degeneration as smoking can worsen this condition.

1. Smokers should NOT take vitamins with Beta-Carotene, but should only take the “Bausch & Lomb PreserVision with Lutein”, “Ocuvite Lutein” or “I-Caps Lutein-Enriched” as these are the only ones with no Beta-Carotene.

2. Patients taking blood thinning medications such as aspirin, coumadin & warfarin should NOT take vitamins with Lutein but CAN take Beta-Carotene. These patients should only take the “Bausch & Lomb PreserVision-AREDS” or “I-Caps AREDS Formula” – DO NOT use regular Ocuvite, Ocuvite/Lutein, or Ocuvite Extra as all three of these contain Lutein.

3. If you don’t smoke and are not taking blood thinning medications, you can use any Eye Vitamin supplement but we recommend “Bausch & Lomb Ocuvite PreserVision-AREDS” or  “I-Caps AREDS Formula”

Specific foods can also help. Nuts, green leafy vegetables and yellow and orange vegetables and fish are beneficial. You should decrease your intake of animal fats and trans-fats as well as processed baked goods like cakes, pies and cookies.

You should wear good, optical quality sunglasses (not cheap drugstore sunglasses). Ultraviolet light (sunlight) can worsen Macular Degeneration.

Increasing exercise has also been shown to improve Macular Degeneration.
